GRAND JURY ISSUES 94 INDICTMENTS IN INSURANCE FRAUD SCHEME
After an in-depth investigation and outstanding cooperative effort by law enforcement, a Middlesex, Massachusetts, Grand Jury returned 94 indictments against 16 defendants in an insurance fraud scheme which bilked thousands from unsuspecting insurance carriers. In the underlying cases, motor vehicle accidents were staged throughout Massachusetts and then fraudulent insurance claims were filed. The insurance carriers paid out more than $60,000 on two of the three fraudulently staged accidents, but became suspicious and paid no money in relation to the third. Fraud is the leading reason for increased premiums in the insurance industry today. It is illegal to stage an accident or exaggerate injuries to collect insurance money and criminal convictions for these fraudulent acts can result in fines and imprisonment, as well as civil penalties. If you suspect insurance fraud, we urge you to contact your local law enforcement agency to report your observations. With active consumer participation, these criminals can be taken off our streets!
